AMINA Bank and Deutsche Börse's Crypto Finance Group have completed a pilot using Google Cloud's Universal Ledger platform to demonstrate real-time fiat settlement between Swiss banks — proving that distributed ledger technology can integrate into traditional banking infrastructure without requiring new digital currencies or changes to existing regulatory frameworks.
The pilot ran with AMINA Bank, Crypto Finance Group acting as Currency Operator, and several additional unnamed Swiss banking partners. Crypto Finance managed bank onboarding and enforced transaction rules on the ledger, while AMINA embedded the Universal Ledger system directly into its core banking platform — enabling instant payments for select clients with no visible changes to front-end operations. The design philosophy is significant: rather than building a parallel payment rail requiring new regulatory treatment, the pilot demonstrated how DLT can operate invisibly inside existing banking plumbing.
The pilot demonstrated that distributed ledger settlement can achieve 24/7 operation across multiple Swiss banking institutions while maintaining full compliance with Swiss financial standards, KYC requirements, and AML procedures — without requiring any new digital currencies or regulatory changes.
Google Cloud's Universal Ledger is a cloud-native infrastructure platform designed to bring distributed ledger settlement capability to traditional financial institutions. The platform follows Google Cloud's broader push into financial infrastructure, including existing partnerships with CME Group. For Swiss banks, the appeal is practical: DLT settlement can reduce the counterparty settlement windows that introduce overnight risk, while cloud infrastructure eliminates the need to build and maintain proprietary blockchain nodes.
The next phase of the initiative will expand to more financial institutions and begin transitioning from pilot testing to live operational use. Consumer-facing applications — including point-of-sale integration and international payment corridors — are on the longer-term roadmap, representing the journey from institutional plumbing upgrade to retail payment transformation.
For investors tracking the tokenization and digital payments space, the AMINA-Google Cloud pilot is an important proof of concept. It demonstrates that the infrastructure for real-time, 24/7 interbank settlement exists today using commercially available cloud technology — without requiring a CBDC, a new regulatory regime, or industry-wide blockchain adoption. The fact that AMINA could embed the system into its core banking platform without disrupting client-facing operations suggests that DLT settlement is approaching the threshold of mainstream banking adoption. Switzerland, with its dense concentration of crypto-native banks willing to pilot new infrastructure, is likely to be an early commercialization market for this technology.
